Neighborhoods Launch Community Based Fight For 15 Campaign Today: Northwest Side McDonald’s Targeted in Community’s Demand For Living Wage

Following Governor Rauner’s Proposed Budget Cuts, Chicago Northwest Side Community Residents and McDonald’s Workers Unite to Demand McDonalds pay their workers $15 an hour and respect their Union rights

WHAT: Community lead Protest and Press Conference at Northwest Side McDonald’s Restaurant Launching community focused “Fight for Our Neighborhoods, Fight for 15!” campaign.

WHO: Over 30 Communities United leaders along with McDonald’s employees from Chicago’s Northwest Side

WHEN: Friday, February 20, 2015 (4:15pm)

WHERE: McDonald’s on Elston and Irving Park Rd. 3615 W. Irving Park

WHY: The “Fight for 15” is moving to Chicago’s neighborhood. “This is a workers rights issue just as much as a community issue. When McDonald’s changes their policies, my community will be better for my kids,” Communities United leader and single mother of three, Manolita Huber said. “That’s why I’m fighting for $15!” The announcements of Governor Rauner’s proposed budget cuts threaten essential services for working families. Now more than ever, community members are pushing for a living wage, as a much needed solution. Felipe Mojica lives on Chicago’s northwest side near Manolita. He has worked in McDonald's for 31 years and still makes $8.85. Felipe can't pay the rent with his salary and also demands more respect and benefits. Manolita and other community residents believe that when northwest side residents are paid a living wage, quality of life in the entire community will improve. That’s why they’re launching “Fight With Our Families, Fight for 15!” a new community focused campaign, targeting neighborhood McDonald’s on Chicago’s northwest side, led by Communities United. Today’s action will be the first in a series of actions taking place over the next few months on McDonald’s located on Chicago’s northwest side.
