Chicago, IL — From 6-8 PM on August 29th, 2016, Co-Prosperity Sphere (3219 S Morgan St.) will be hosting author Peter McCoy for a free evening presentation and reading on McCoy’s new and unprecedented book about mushrooms, Radical Mycology: A Treatise On Seeing & Working With Fungi.

Fungi are everywhere around us, fulfilling critical ecological roles and sustaining whole habitats. Mushrooms and other fungi are deeply woven in the history of the Earth and human cultures from around the world. And today, mushroom cultivation is increasingly proving its ability to address a range of pressing global issues, from food shortages, to chronic disease rates, to environmental degradation. And yet, most people are unaware of the importance that the Fungal Kingdom holds in stewarding our world.

To address this paradox, internationally-celebrated mushroom cultivator and open-source mycologist Peter McCoy spent the last two years researching and writing his latest book, Radical Mycology: A Treatise On Seeing & Working With Fungi. A 600-page compendium of all things related to, as McCoy describes it, “working with fungi for personal, societal, and ecological health,” this unprecedented text brings a whole new perspective to the mysterious world of mushrooms. Whereas the majority of books on mycology (the science of fungi) focus solely on cooking or hunting mushrooms, Radical Mycology covers these topics and much more in a glorifying presentation unlike anything written to date. Everything from the roles fungi play in nature, to their fascinating history, to their practical applications in everyday life are covered in-depth alongside detailed instructions for how to make medicinal mushroom products, grow fermenting fungi, and design a mushroom farm. Throughout the text, McCoy also offers thought-provoking ideas on how fungi can influence whole societies, a unique perspective McCoy has been promoting for the last decade through Radical Mycology, a grassroots organization he co-founded in 2006.

To promote the book’s release, Peter is touring the country for 3 months in his mobile mushroom lab and fungal roadshow. And on Monday, August 29th from 6-8 PM he will be making a stop at Co-Prosperity Sphere to hold a free reading and presentation on the book’s many topics.

“My hope with this book and tour is to make mycology exciting and accessible for everyone. Fungi are fascinating—mind-boggling, really—and I think it’s time that more folks experienced all that they have to offer,” says McCoy.
